Our Comprehensive Surgical Offerings:
Neutering:
Neutering (castration for males and spaying for females) is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in veterinary practice.
Benefits of Neutering:
For Females (Spaying): Prevents unwanted pregnancies, reducing the risk of mammary (breast) cancer (especially if done early), and removes the risk of potentially life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra). It also stops heat cycles and associated behaviours. We feel that on balance we would recommend spaying for the majority of dogs and cats that owners do not intend to breed. We would also recommend for Rabbits and Guinea-pigs to prevent uterine and ovarian disorders however this is a more nuanced discussion. It can be a good option for some ferrets however contraceptive implants can be a better choice.
For Males (Castration): Prevents unwanted pregnancies, reduces the risk of certain cancers (e.g., testicular cancer), and can decrease undesirable behaviours such as roaming, conflict between entire males, and urine marking. We would recommend neutering for all male cats who’s owner don’t intend to breed, some male dogs and some rabbits, guineapigs and ferrets. You are welcome to discuss this with one of our team.
When is the right time to neuter your pet? We are happy to discuss what is best for your individual pet’s health, breed, and lifestyle. Our team will provide personalised advice to help you make an informed decision.
Wide Range of Soft Tissue Surgery
Soft tissue surgery encompasses a vast array of procedures that do not involve bones or joints. Our skilled veterinary surgeons are proficient in performing a diverse range of these operations to address various health conditions, including:
Mass Removals: Surgical excision of lumps, bumps, and tumours, with subsequent histopathology to determine their nature (benign or malignant).
Wound Repair: Expert closure and management of complex wounds, lacerations, and abscesses to promote healing and prevent infection.
Cystotomy: Surgical removal of bladder stones (uroliths) or bladder tumours, restoring normal urinary function.
Gastrointestinal Surgery: Procedures to address issues within the digestive tract, such as foreign body removal from the stomach or intestines (gastrotomy, enterotomy), removal of diseased sections of the bowel (enterectomy), or correction of life-threatening conditions like Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV).
Splenectomy: Surgical removal of the spleen due to trauma, rupture, or certain diseases.
And many other internal organ surgeries, addressing liver disease, gall bladder issues, and more.
Orthopaedics: Specialised Bone and Joint Surgery
For pets requiring specialised care for their bones and joints, we provide access to extensive orthopaedic surgery through a reliable and expert external referral service. While we handle some minor orthopaedic issues in-house, for complex fractures, ligament ruptures (e.g., cruciate ligament repair), joint diseases, or spinal conditions, we ensure your pet benefits from the highest level of specialist care.
We will manage your pet's initial assessment, discuss the best referral options whether this is a surgeon coming to Tarka or you and your pet travelling to them.
We will coordinate seamlessly with the specialist or certificate holder veterinary orthopaedic surgeon to ensure continuous, high-quality care throughout their journey.
We are committed to providing the best possible surgical outcome for your pet, from initial diagnosis through to recovery and rehabilitation. If your pet requires a surgical procedure, please contact us to discuss their needs and to receive a detailed estimate.
